Production of SMCs
What are SMCs?
SMC stands for “Soft Magnetic Composites”. These materials consist of a combination of magnetic particles embedded in a non-magnetic (and electrically non-conductive) matrix. SMCs are widely used in electrical engineering and electronics, in particular for the manufacture of components such as transformers, inductors and other magnetic components (electromobility, stators, cores, etc.).
The main features of SMCs are:
1. Good magnetic properties:
SMCs offer high magnetic permeability and moderate losses (lower frequency dependence of coercivity than in laminated cores), making them ideal for applications where this efficiency is important.
2. Formability:
The use of powder metallurgy allows SMCs to be formed into complex shapes and designs, and the magnetic properties to be shaped in a wide range by combining materials, increasing flexibility in product development. Even small cores, where, for example, the construction of a laminated core reaches its limits, can be designed with low losses.
3. Low weight:
Compared to traditional core materials (laminated cores and stators), SMCs are often lighter (approx. 7.4-7.6 g/cm³ vs. steel sheet alloys approx. 7.6-7.75 g/cm³), which can be advantageous in some applications.
4. Low power losses:
Compared to other core materials used (in particular lamination stacks => normal/transverse), SMCs have little field direction dependent eddy current loss differences, which, with design restrictions, leads to higher efficiency in electrical devices.
